As part of the Human Rights Act for Australia Consultation process, public hearings were held on 1–3 July in the Great Hall of Parliament House, Canberra. NSW Community Campaigns intern, Danielle Naranjilla, attended and saw democracy in action. Here is her report.

On 30 June 2009, the Amnesty Group at North Sydney Girls High School held a stall to raise awareness on the unresolved issue of justice for 'comfort women'. Some 200,000 'comfort women' were sexually enslaved in Japanese occupied countries in Southeast Asia during the Second World War.

Do you want to make a difference in our Justice for Comfort Women Campaign? Well, we're looking for volunteers to help out at an event at Customs House in August. We are also looking for (visual) artists to help perform a live artistic demonstration at this event.

On Tuesday 16 June Amnesty International and NSW Young Lawyers hosted a discussion about current views towards refugees, focusing on the irony of two lines from the second verse of the national anthem: “for those who’ve come across the seas, we’ve boundless plains to share.” The event was a success with a great turnout and several high profile speakers making up the discussion.
